LIVE WITH GRATITUDEA PURPOSEFUL LIFE

Hi there, fellow empty nesters! So, your children have left on their own adventures, leaving you with a quieter house and a lot more time on your hands. But wait, before you dive headfirst into this new phase, let's talk about something crucial: mindfulness.
Midlife is a rollercoaster ride of emotions and transitions. It's easy to get lost in nostalgia or anxiety about the future. That's where mindfulness swoops in like a superhero cape, ready to save the day.
But what exactly is mindfulness?
Think of it as the art of being present, fully engaged in the here and now. It's about tuning into your thoughts, feelings, and sensations without judgment.
Now, how can we practice this mindfulness magic? Here are a few simple ways:
Meditation:
Set aside a few minutes each day to sit quietly and focus on your breath. You could perform a calming mantra or mindful colour in.
Body Scan:
Take a mental inventory of your body, noticing any areas of tension or discomfort, and gently release them. It’s important to love your body more as you get older.
Mindful Walking:
Take a leisurely stroll outdoors, paying attention to each step and the sensations around you. What can you smell? What do you see? What can you touch? What do you hear?
Gratitude Journaling:
Write down three things you're grateful for each day, shift your focus to the positives in your life. Start with the small things like your slippers, your morning cup of tea, the sunshine peeking in through the curtains. When we start with the small things the big things just happen. Read this BLOG POST for more Journaling Tips.
By entwining these practices into your daily routine, you'll cultivate a sense of peace and resilience to manage the ups and downs of midlife. I’ve recently started weaving and I’m loving it. Planning and preparing for my projects gives me purpose, then the act of weaving itself is a mindful activity that I look forward to each day.
Here’s some more mindful suggestions;
Mindful Eating:
Slow down and savour each bite during meals. Notice the flavours, textures, and sensations in your mouth. Eating mindfully can not only improve digestion but also deepen your appreciation for food. Now that your children have left you may also be able to try different flavours and foods.
Digital Detox:
Take breaks from screens and technology. Set boundaries for device use, especially during meals, before bedtime, and during quality time with loved ones. Disconnecting from the digital world allows you to reconnect with yourself and those around you. It also affords moments for you to be intentional with your time. Time to find altered purpose.
Mindful Breathing:
Take a few moments throughout the day to focus on your breath. Close your eyes, inhale deeply through your nose, and exhale slowly through your mouth. This simple practice can help calm your mind. It will also reduce stress in the midst of daily chaos. It’s a great habit to get into.
Self-Compassion:
Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially during challenging times. Recognise that it's okay to not be perfect and to experience difficult emotions. Offer yourself the same compassion you would extend to a friend in need. Often, we allow our self-talk to rule our actions. As we age, we must silence our inner critique and do what we know we must. Take a look at this BLOG POST for Mindset Tips.
Mindful Communication:
Practice active listening during conversations. Give your full attention to the speaker without interrupting or formulating your response in advance. This fosters deeper connections and understanding in your relationships. This is particularly crucial with your young adults as they are discovering their independence. Take a look at this BLOG for reasons to listen more.
Nature Immersion:
Spend time in nature and soak in the beauty around you. Whether it's a hike in the mountains, a stroll in the park, or simply sitting in your backyard, allow yourself to be fully present and appreciate the wonders of the natural world. You realise its beauty when you take the time to stop and be mindful.
Remember, mindfulness is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself as you explore these practices and find what works best for you. Embrace each moment with openness and curiosity, and you'll discover a newfound sense of peace and fulfilment in midlife and beyond. Oh, don’t forget to journal about it.
