Seven Heartfelt Traditions Pre-Empty Nesters Should Embrace Before Their Fledglings Fly

Hi there, fellow parents on the brink of an empty nest! Can you believe it's almost time for our little ones to venture off into the world? While the thought might bring a tear to your eye (trust me, I'm right there with you), let's channel that energy into something beautiful. Let's create traditions that'll make these last moments at home truly special. Here are seven heartfelt tips for you:

1. Family Recipe Night

Whip up your favourite family recipes together and create a cookbook filled with love and laughter. We, like many, had Friday night Pizza night. It was the one evening that we sat in the lounge and ate dinner while we watched a movie. Which leads nicely onto the next idea.

2. Weekly Family Movie Night

Pop some popcorn, snuggle up under a blanket, and enjoy a movie marathon filled with your family's all-time favourites. As a family of five, we didn’t always agree on each other’s movie choice but it was a family agreement that we would take it in turns choosing them and the others had to watch it regardless. It evened itself out.

3. Memory Jar

Start a memory jar where everyone can jot down their favourite moments from the week. Read them together when you're feeling nostalgic. This is a great idea for so many events, i.e 18th, 21st, when they leave home.

4. Bucket List Adventures

Make a family bucket list and start checking off those adventures you've always dreamed of. This is a fantastic way to build conversations in the future. “Do you remember when…”

5. Volunteer Together

Give back to your community as a family and create lasting bonds through service. Along with great memories this again will give you conversation in the future.

6. Letters to the Future

Write heartfelt letters to each other to be opened on special occasions or when you're missing each other. Letter’s to your future self are a great idea too.

7. Family Photo Shoot

Capture precious moments together with a professional family photo shoot to cherish for years to come. If professional photos are not an option for you, enlist a friend to take some happy snaps. You could save them onto thumb drives and give one to each member of the family, so that they can add to it in the future.

These traditions may seem small, but trust me, they'll leave a big impact on your family dynamics, create memories that'll last a lifetime and be traditions that you can hold as a family moving forward. So, let's embrace this next chapter with open hearts and open arms. Our nest might be empty soon, but our love will always remain full.
