Hi there, parents!
So, your little one has finally taken flight and ventured out into the big wide world. It’s an exhilarating moment, watching them embrace independence and chase their dreams. But amid the excitement, there’s a twinge of sadness too, isn’t there? The nest feels a bit emptier without their laughter and chatter.
Fret not! Just because they’ve flown from your nest doesn’t mean they’ve flown from your hearts. Here are seven tips to help you stay connected with your young adults even when they’re miles away:
1. Embrace Technology
In this digital age, technology is a our best friend. Facetime, Skype, WhatsApp – use whatever means necessary to bridge the physical gap. A simple video call can make all the difference and make them feel closer to home.

2. Schedule Regular Check-Ins
Life gets busy, but make it a priority to schedule regular check-ins. Whether it’s a weekly phone call or a monthly visit, having a set time to catch up fosters consistency and shows them they’re always on your mind.
3. Send Care Packages
Who doesn’t love receiving a surprise package in the mail? Send them a box filled with their favourite treats, handwritten notes, gift cards and little reminders of home. It’s a tangible way to show your love and care from afar.
4. Support Their Independence
While it’s tempting to hover, give them space to spread their wings. Encourage their independence and celebrate their achievements, even the small ones. Knowing you believe in them boosts their confidence and strengthens your bond. Read this BLOG POST so you don't make the Seven Common Mistakes that Empty Nesters Make.
5. Share Hobbies Virtually
Bond over shared interests, even if you’re miles apart. Start a virtual book club, watch the same movie simultaneously and discuss afterward, or challenge each other to a friendly game online. It’s a fun way to stay connected and create new memories together.
6. Listen, Listen, Listen
When they reach out, be there to listen – without judgment or interruption. Let them vent about their triumphs and struggles, and offer a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on. Sometimes, all they need is someone to listen to them and simply understand. Read the BLOG POST for tips.
7. Plan Quality Time Together
Make the most of the time you spend together. Plan meaningful activities or trips that create lasting memories. Whether it’s a family vacation or a simple dinner at their favourite restaurant, cherish these moments and make them count. Remember to take a photo or two.
Remember, parenting is a lifelong journey, and just because they’ve left home doesn’t mean your role diminishes. By staying connected and involved in their lives, you continue to be their guiding light, no matter where they roam.
So, here’s to embracing this new chapter, navigating the ups and downs, and cherishing every moment of the journey. After all, the bond between parent and child knows no distance.
Until next time, keep those connections strong and hearts even stronger!
Love and Support,
Jane X
